About Thoughtworks
Thoughtworks is a global technology consultancy that was founded in 1993 in Chicago, Illinois. The company works at the intersection of strategy, design, and software engineering to help businesses become modern digital organizations. Today Thoughtworks has more than 10,500 employees working across 48 offices in 19 countries, making it one of the most recognized technology consulting brands in the world. The company is especially well known for being one of the early pioneers of agile software development and for its strong commitment to social impact and workplace diversity.
What Does the Thoughtworks Logo Mean?
The Thoughtworks logo is not just a name written in a font — every element of it has been designed with a clear purpose.
The small geometric shape that sits in front of the company name is officially called the Oblique. It represents the company’s constant drive toward technological excellence and its commitment to always moving forward. The same diagonal angle that defines the Oblique icon is also carried through the letters of the custom wordmark, creating a visual connection between the two elements.
The wordmark itself is completely handcrafted and unique to Thoughtworks — it was not built from any existing typeface. The design feels contemporary, casual, and approachable while still being professional. It was intentionally built to hold two sides of the same personality — analytical yet creative, serious yet friendly, opinionated yet open.
The 2021 Rebrand
In June 2021, Thoughtworks launched a completely redesigned logo and visual identity. The new brand tagline became “Creating Extraordinary Impact Together.” What makes this rebrand particularly unique is that it was designed entirely in-house — no external agency was hired. A steering committee of more than 30 Thoughtworkers from different functions and regions across the globe came together and worked through five agile design sprints to create the new identity.
The rebrand introduced the Oblique icon, a refined and handcrafted wordmark, variable fonts, a reimagined color palette, and a new photography style. Every design decision was made with digital accessibility and sustainability in mind, ensuring the identity works well for all users across all kinds of screens and display preferences.
Thoughtworks Brand Colors
The primary color of the Thoughtworks brand is red. It was chosen because it creates immediate visual impact, draws attention, and communicates passion and energy. Red is paired with black and white throughout the brand to keep the overall look bold, clean, and professional. The full color palette includes eight bold colors in total, all selected to be visually accessible and inclusive for users with different display settings or visual needs.
PNG vs SVG — Which One Should You Download?
PNG is a raster image format, meaning it is made up of pixels. It works perfectly for social media posts, email signatures, PowerPoint presentations, and any situation where you just need a clean image file with a transparent background. However, if you enlarge a PNG too much, the edges can start to look soft or pixelated.
SVG is a vector format, meaning it is built from mathematical paths rather than pixels. This means you can scale an SVG to any size — from a tiny favicon to a large billboard — and it will always stay perfectly sharp and clear. SVG files are also smaller in size than high-resolution PNG files, and they can be styled or animated using CSS and JavaScript. For website and app use, SVG is almost always the better choice.
If you are using the logo in a document or on social media, download the PNG. If you are placing it on a website or need it to look sharp on any screen size, download the SVG.
